HOW WE WORK

We are providing the blueprint for sustainable alternatives to orphanages: truly social services run by and for communities to strengthen families.

THE CHALLENGE

Orphanages are separating families, fracturing communities, and ultimately harming children. Orphanages are standing in the way of a thriving society yet they are still being set-up and run, in spite of the huge cost to children’s wellbeing and Uganda as a whole. We know change is hard and scary. There are too many orphanages and too few alternatives. They can feel necessary, and seem like the ‘obvious’ solution, when families are in need.

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY

We believe that most people ultimately want what’s best for children. We’ve all felt the desire to want to protect children - regular donations to orphanages demonstrate just how many of us do. We believe it is possible to redirect funding and support towards family based care rather than institutional care, knowing that there are more cost-effective alternatives to orphanages that need to be better understood and promoted.

There is a better way.

OUR APPROACH

Child’s i Foundation is providing a blueprint for sustainable alternatives to orphanages: truly social services run by and for communities to strengthen families and support them to raise their children, as well as finding new foster and adoptive families for those who need them. We are highlighting the ways in which orphanages cause harm and prove how unnecessary they are, even those that try their best to provide caring environments. We learned the hard way that there’s no such thing as a good orphanage so we’re uniquely placed to help others reimagine the way they care, repurpose the orphanages that exist and rebuild community approaches to supporting families and children.

SYSTEMIC CHANGE

District and Division Transformation

By partnering with the Government, we are proving that orphanages are not necessary when there is a functioning, community-led child protection network committed to seeing children grow up in safe and loving families.

We have told you we are building a blueprint: truly social services run by and for communities to strengthen families and support them to raise their children. We can not do this without the commitment of local Government. In Tororo and Mpigi districts, and Makindye division in Kampala, we are partnering with authorities that are committed to ensuring no child in their districts grow up in an orphanage. The Government must lead on the child protection - but they also can not do it alone. By using community volunteers to monitor child protection in their own communities at risk families are supported - and don’t get to the point of having to make the heartbreaking choice of placing their child in an orphanage.

COMMUNITY RESPONSE

Strengthening the Social Service Workforce

In Uganda, the social workforce is largely informal and not regulated. Because of this, providing family-based care training across all levels of social service workers - from high level Government officials to community volunteers - is crucial in ensuring the workforce is equipped to support families and make sure children grow up in families, not orphanages.

INFLUENCING CHANGE

Changing hearts and minds

At Child’s i Foundation, changing hearts and minds is at the core of our existence. We once ran a babies’ home, and had a change of heart. We know first hand how powerful advocacy and storytelling can be.
